Fonts convey so much personality and finding just the right one from our wide selection of fonts styles can be overwhelming. So here's a little cheat sheet with the most popular font styles by age, to make the monogramming for your student's back-to-school gear just right.
As always, if you need advice please don't hesitate to email, call or visit us in the studio. We absolutely love to design monograms and will happily help you choose the best font style and thread colour.
Preschool and Kindergarten Students
Monogramming your child's nursery smock, spare clothes bag, snack bag or backpack makes so much sense. It makes the first stage of school extra exciting to have personalised kit, and helps teachers keep things organised at school.
We have a number of whimsical fonts that appeal to young children because they've seen the typefaces on their favourite books, films and places. They can be found in the Themed tab on our website's monogram design tool.
Like Dr Soos, which is what it sounds like, or Dotti font, which looks like Tinkertoys. Comics font incorporates letter shapes that children use when they first learn to write letters at school, and we recommend using this on nursery smocks. Or Curly which is often used on sweet shop or ice cream shop parlour signs and looks sweet on pastel-coloured bags.
Primary School
For students in the Reception through Year 6 age range, we find that they tend to like names rather than initials on their bags. However keep in mind that initials are often more practical at school if there's more than one child with the same name, and more discrete outside of school if you don't want strangers to know your child's first name.
Children this age love to experiment with thread colours. Favourite football teams, trending colours in fashion and bedroom decor all influence children's colour choices. but initials are often more practical at school and more discrete outside of school.Sitting down with our website's monogramming design tool is a fun design experience and will ensure that your child loves the font style they choose.
If you need guidance, we recommend character-filled fonts like the sporty-themed Athletic or hand-writing inspired Sweetheart which are our two most popular font styles for this age.
Secondary School
The secondary school stage, whether its day school or boarding, brings lots of gear with it. Sports bags, laptop bags, weekender bags, wash bags for post-gym or post-swim toiletries, music cases and so much more. Monogramming is a great way to keep all these bags organised.
For boarding school students, monogrammed towels and bedlinen make a lot of sense while helping to make the dorm feel more like home.
For teenagers we recommend more sophisticated monogram fonts like Schoolbook or a monogram shape font like Modern Fancy which looks a bit like a personal logo.
Just remember that with a few of our monogram shapes, like Modern Fancy above, the surname is automatically put in the middle of the design because it's how monograms are traditionally done. You'll find these fonts in the tab marked Traditional. Other Non-Traditional monogram shape fonts have the initials in the correct order.
University
Setting up the university flat or dorm room leaves so much scope for monogramming. From towels and robes, to bedding and cushions, to travel bags for moving easily back and forth, monogramming will make everything a little more personal. And they'll last well beyond university life.
For this reason we recommend classic fonts like Helvetica in subtle thread colours for those who want to blend in. And more elaborate font styles like the Circle monogram font in a bright contrast colour for the ones who are happy to stand out.
