We were recently presented with an article from Mr Porter called Gent's Guide: Embroidery. And it resonated with us quite deeply, as we're in the embroidery business and many of our clients are men. So we thought we'd share some insights in to trends we're seeing for men's embroidery, particularly monogramming.
As the Mr Porter article describes, most men can be characterised as either trendsetters or traditionalists. The good news is that there's room for embroidery for both types.
An easy way to elevate the traditionalist's daily wardrobe and incorporate monograming is to take a basic piece of clothing and add details in unconventional places wether that be the cuff of a shirt or along the buttons of a shirt. A small detail that we see daily on pieces like Come de Garçon but in a subtle way to simply change up a basic.
A monogram on the front left chest (positioned along the bottom rib on the left side) is the ultimate traditionalist gesture. Trendsetters will position the monogram in a more daring place: the breast pocket, the sleeve or under the collar.
To really make a statement with your wardrobe is to fully embrace the character embroidery can give a piece. Just scaling up the size of embellishment can create a new personality to a piece and make it more contemporary. Having an unique item in your wardrobe is an easy well to elevate a pair of jeans or a basic t-shirt with out have to put too much thought behind it. Brands like Gucci and Loewe have beautiful examples of how to incorporate embroidery in menswear.
Accessories are a great place to feature embroidery, particularly monogramming. Socks, pocket square, handkerchiefs, belts, baseball caps, tote bags and even watch straps wear embroidery well.
