We're enjoying seeing how traditional anniversary gift themes are shaping gift-giving by our clients.
The origins of presenting gifts on the occasion of a wedding anniversary dates back to the Middle Ages when husbands in the Holy Roman Empire would present a wreath of silver to their wife on their 25th anniversary, and a wreath of gold on the 50th.
During the 1920s, an American novelist and socialite named Emily Post sought to ease the problem of choosing a gift for each wedding anniversary by including a list of suggested anniversary themes in her popular book called "Etiquette".
Her themes for the early years of marriage are focused on traditional housekeeping materials, things young couples often lack as they set up their home. With more anniversary milestones her gift themes became more rarified, reflecting the established status of the older couple.
Today, over 100 years later, we are often asked to match monogrammed gift ideas to these traditional gift themes.
So here they are, with a nod of thanks to Emily Post who loved monogramming almost as much as we do.
